Maidenhead United do ok in the National League, a few years have been close to promotion. Alan Devonshire has been managing them for years. I used to live there and saw them a few times including a West Ham preseason friendly many years ago. Nice old ground.

Always have a bit of a soft spot for Plymouth Argyle. Used to take the kids to watch them when I was based there in my Navy days. I was determined that they wouldn’t grow up to be Glory Hunters !

Played football manager a few years ago. Affiliated with Mansfield and with the players I loaned them for the seasons they came up through the divisions and into the premier league and for some unknown reason I look out for their results now to see if they've won.

Spent most of my childhood down Devon/Cornwall for family holidays and whenever there if Torquay were at home me and the old man would find a way to get to the games so same with them.

I hate Bolton. Allardyce and Jay-Jay okocha dancing like baboons that year they sent us down plays a big part in my hatred for them

Shrewsbury have grown on me recently due to picking up a few quid backing them in accas at decent odds.
They played some nice football at times last season also..

Port Vale the only club in the English football league not to be named after a town or a city.

Re: Lower division clubs you like and dislike
Always liked to follow Port Vale when Channel 4 used to have the lower division games.

No reason I can think of. Completely arbitrary. Still look out for their results now and again.

Bolton since they relegated us in 2003 and Oldham for nicking the Second Division title from us on the final day.

That league cup game against Wimbledon sticks in my my mind like yesterday as I was recovering from acute tonsillitis and only decided to go at the last minute.
By the end of 90 minutes I had no voice whatsoever
Julian getting sent off for taking out Wise was no surprise and a mass brawl.
Eric Young and co were up to stuff that out on the street would of got them banged up.
I remember at every corner they got all the coins raining down on them from the northbank and Devonshire coming on as sub in a game that his class was totally out of place in and being outstanding and then mad dog nearly bursting the back of the net with the winner.

Re: Lower division clubs you like and dislike
Btw, I don't really like any other English team - have to be honest. It's not that I hate most teams - although there are a few on that list! - it's just that I've never had much time for any other football clubs.

I'm just ambivalent about all teams who are not West Ham. I can appreciate good players from other sides, but almost never the club itself. Le Tissier at Southampton was a case in point in the 90s. Bang average club in all ways - and really disengaged, unpassionate support who I thought were a waste of space - but he was amazing to watch live. Wasted on them.

I do follow an Italian side, because of friends and extended family etc. That's it, really.

It's all about us!

Re: Lower division clubs you like and dislike
TM - yep, absolutely loved being there that night. Not only did we turn over a strong Wimbledon side - but we did it by kicking the bejesus out of them AND playing some football.

Gave them a taste of their own medicine and they absolutely hated it. You could see that they did not like getting beaten at their own game. Shame we were so damn inconsistent around that time.

I too hated that wimbledon team with fashanu & wise. one of the greatest nights ever when we beat them in the league cup, and also kicked the fuck out of them

Hastings United, literally at the end of my road, go on a Saturday if we are playing on a Sunday

Dislike nobody if championship clubs are exempt, no overriding passion to dislike any lower league club

Re: Lower division clubs you like and dislike
Each his own, I suppose, but I could never muster any enthusiasm for liking, or having a soft spot, for other clubs, all a bit bent for me. Someone said earlier they have a soft spot for Charlton because they use to work near there, I mean ffs, come on.

I always hated the old Wimbledon and that continues with the new one.
Birmingham are scummy.
Generally dislike Wigan, Swansea and Bolton from when they were prem.
I'm indifferent to Millwall apart from their psychopath element.

Quite like QPR.

Would happily see Barnet go out of existence. Have lived there for most of the last 35 years and have had dealings with them in the past.

Always had a soft spot for Charlton because I used to work close to the Valley. And also look out for Pompey results as a few or "er in doors" relatives live in Portsmouth.

I hate Leyton Orient all because of the over bearing and obnoxious Barry Hearn

Re: Lower division clubs you like and dislike
Me and my pals at school all followed different teams but we all used to go and watch Barnet together when we were kids in the 80’s. Went to quite a few away games as well.
The derby against Enfield used to be very lively.
Will always have a soft spot for them and great to see them flying at the mo
